Podcast!
For this week I interviewed a colleague about implementing technology into a college curriculum. For this project, I interviewed Laurie from a college in the Midwest regarding her experiences with this. We talked about why the technology was needed and the good and the bad that came with this update. You can listen to this podcast here: Integrating LMS into curriculum
I'll be back to follow up on this experience in a little bit....

ReplyDeleteKsu1msm,
ReplyDeleteFrom my personal experience using an LMS system like Canvas, I agree there are advantages and disadvantages to implementing this system into higher education. I like how you discussed the positives and negatives of implementing the LMS system. A Learning Management System study was done on students, who attended the University of Jordan and students had a positive attitude toward the system which contributed to higher classroom involvement ( Alshorman & Bawaneh, 2018). Near the end of this interview, you mentioned Laurie was unable to successfully integrate an application for posting the students final grades in LMS. Now that her University has implemented an LMS system and the majority of the staff and students who use the system are pleased with it. How long will it take before they can either roll out a new version of LMS or make the updates necessary to meet all student’s needs? Or will they still need to post the final grades in a different software for now.

Hi Ksu1msm,
ReplyDeleteI have to agree there are many benefits to podcasts. I wish I would have had instructors who used podcasts when I was doing my undergraduate and there was a lot of memorization of facts (history lectures come to mind right away). I am a visual learner and my History professor was a storyteller lecturer. Writing notes was long and arduous and a podcast would have assisted greatly.
On the cons side, you listed “Free programs or inexpensive programs to launch a podcast do exist, but it does require a little bit of technical knowledge to pull it together.” I can really empathize with this statement having now gone through it. It took four different editing tools for me to find one that I could figure out how to manipulate, then it took me another download of a program to compress the file so I could actually upload the file. While I found it frustrating, I also found it challenging and actually ended up enjoying the project in the end. I am glad to have gone through the challenge to be able to share my experience if/when I decide to integrate a project like this when I teach.
I really enjoyed your video podcast on integrating an LMS into curriculum. It reminded me of some of the research I did when working on the Wiki project. The Critical Success Factor model (Dennison, 2014) for technological innovation talks about not only making sure faculty are on board with the technology but IT leaders also. I wonder if IT leaders would have caught the lack of interface with the grades? It is a great lesson learned and your interviewee sounds like such a fount of knowledge. It has to be interesting coming in on the ground floor of implementing something like and LMS. Thank you for sharing with the class.
